Using Multiphysics to Predict and Prevent EV Battery Fire
Electric vehicles (EV) offer the exciting possibility to meet the world’s transportation demands in an environmentally sustainable way. Mass adoption could help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, but the lithium-ion (Li-on) batteries that power them still present unique challenges to designers and engineers, primary among them to ensuring safety against battery fire.

To achieve vehicle manufacturer’s ambitious adoption goals, it is necessary to improve the safety of Li-on batteries by better understanding all of the complex, interconnected aspects of their behavior across both normal and extreme duty cycles.

BOTTPOWER Designs Lightweight Bracket for Motorbike
BOTT stands for “Battle of the Twins,” a racing category for motorbikes with two-cylinder four stroke engines.

Bottpower is a Spanish motorsport engineering company located in Valencia. They specialize in designing and building custom motorbikes for racing and street use. They design and build parts, systems, and prototypes for other companies.

A project challenge at Bottpower was to design a lightweight stay bracket for their motorbike that could withstand the main and aerodynamic loads. The goal was finding the optimal weight and stiffness ratio to reduce weight while ensuring safety measures. All of this had to be done quickly in order to arrive on time at Addit3D, Spain's most important 3D-print fair, to showcase the bike. The optimal design for aerodynamic loads was found using Altair software.

BOTT(Battle of The Twin)は、2気筒4ストロークエンジンを搭載したバイクのレースです。


Bottpowerプロジェクトの課題は、主荷重と空力荷重に耐えられるバイク用の軽量ステーブラケットを設計することでした。 安全性を満たしながら軽量化するために、最適な重量と剛性比を見つけることが目標でした。


Bottpower Project は、外部流れをVirtual Wind Tunnelで計算し風圧を算出(300km/h運行想定)。その荷重を用いてInspireでトポロジー最適化。HyperMeshとSimLabで詳細を検証しました。

Reduction of Moving Masses – Streamlined Design for Improved Engine Performance
To expand the rpm range of a motorcycle engine, a new type of rocker arm with lower inertia was needed at KTM. The new rocker arm was required to have the same, or better stiffness and deformation level as the previous design. KTM used Altair HyperWorks™ for nonlinear topology optimization and nonlinear structural analysis to develop the new rocker arm. Thanks to this, the component inertia could be reduced by 15 percent, component mass was reduced by 21 percent, and the stiffness increased by 14 percent which lead to an extension of the rotational speed by 150-200 rpm.

Michigan Baja Racing (MBR) is a collegiate race team in the North American Baja SAE intercollegiate competition. The team designs, builds, and tests a new single-seater off-road race car from scratch every year to compete against hundreds of other teams across the United States. The main dynamic events are acceleration, maneuverability, hill climb, suspension and traction (S&T), and a four-hour endurance race.

Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance Uses Altair SimSolid to Bring Vehicles Chassis Faster onto the Road
Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance is a French-Japanese strategic partnership between the automobile manufacturers Renault (based in France), Nissan (based in Japan) and Mitsubishi Motors (based in Japan). Today, the automotive group has 122 manufacturing plants worldwide with nearly 450,000 employees controlling ten major brands: Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Infiniti, Renault Samsung, Dacia, Alpine, Datsun, Venucia, and Lada. The ambition of the alliance is to offer autonomous drive, connectivity features, and services on a wide range of affordable vehicles. As part of the Renault Chassis Le Mans plant, which is building car-to-ground connecting components for the Renault Group and for the Alliance, the CTC Chassis Technical Center is a CAD engineering center where 350 engineers and technicians are working with a focus on testing and validation. Renault has been using SimSolid to perform simulations to develop lighter chassis faster.

Taking Off with Simulation
New airborne solutions are being developed to accommodate one or more persons for air travel. Explorations including large drones, small helicopters, airplanes, and flying cars will enable companies to respond to the demand for Personal Air Mobility (PAM). The team at Talaria was founded by students at the Delft University of Technology. The idea for Talaria’s Individual Air Mobility project began at the end of 2017. Founder Philipp Essle heard about the Boeing GoFly competition which rewarded the best designs for a one-person aircraft. Talaria’s mission is to develop an electrically driven PAM that can take-off and land vertically in urban environments. Talaria is using Altair Inspire to check whether material and weight could be reduced through topology optimization. This approach resulted in a significant 1.5-kilogram weight reduction of the rotor hubs.

Efficiently Simulating and Optimising Antenna Placement in Virtual Test Scenarios
In this practical workshop we will present both the theory and background of the numerical techniques used, as well as presenting application examples and real-world cases studies on how such a process is used in the industry today. It will be a combination of presentation and demonstration of the best insight in the process.

Due to increasing complexity and a higher demand for connectivity for all sorts of products, physical measurements are more and more enhanced by virtual testing, not only on component level but also for full platforms like vehicles, aircrafts, etc. in their environment. Simulation in the design stage is crucial for successful deployment.

This workshop demonstrates the development process, from antenna evaluation to placing the antenna concepts on a platform and performing the virtual test drive / flight analysis also using optimization to increase the performance of the system. The numerical methods applied for such types of analysis,like full wave solutions for the antenna design and placement, as well as different wave propagation models like empirical models or dominant path solutions will also be discussed in more detail.

Application examples from the automotive and aerospace domain will show time variant results for antenna systems on moving objects e.g. also for MIMO scenarios.
